Or as some of our shooters used to say, just short of 'Hernia Tight.' NM Armorers always tightened down the GCL screw on a Garand (and an M14 gas plug) by holding the GC in a padded vice and thus we put more torque on them than anyone can do by holding the rifle and tightening the GCL screw with the M10 Combination tool. You can get close to the same thing when using a GCL wrench along with whatever you use to tighten the screw, but not quite the same. I can't say that no one ever used a torque wrench on an M1 Garand GCL screw before we Military NM Armorers stared using them on NM M14 gas plugs, but most of the Older NM Military and Civilian Armorers I ran across - looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them about that in the old days. Many folks will shudder at this, but what was VERY common on NM Garands was they would file a small cut across the GCL and GCL screw when it was tightened down the way 'that rifle liked it.' From then on, when they pulled the screw, they tightened it back to where the file lines aligned. Some guys used paint or even finger nail polish on both parts to show where the parts should align. The problem with that was some solvents took that off the parts when they cleaned the GC's. I have never actually measured wih a torque wrench how much torque I was taught to put on a GCL scsrew NM Garand and of course I tighten standard Garand GCL screws the same way. Though this is a guess, it is based on the knowledge gained from tightening thousands of M14 gas plugs. I would guess we use at least 15 to 20 Foot Pounds. Oh, the Army AMU M14 manual said to use 150 INCH Pounds to tighten M14 gas plugs. That is 12 1/2 Foot Pounds. We Marines used 23 Foot Pounds on our NM M14 gas plugs and our gas plugs NEVER loosened from firing far more than civilians do and we found they gave the best accuracy at that torque.
